Five Fun Hobbies for the Heart, Soul, and Body

Developing a hobby or learning a new skill challenges you and keeps life interesting. Hobbies are great to have at any age, especially for seniors. After retirement, there’s all the time in the world to do the things you want to do, but who says that seniors need to stick to Bingo and baking? You can get out and have fun at any age with these physical and performance-based hobbies. 

Acting

There’s no such thing as “too old to start acting.” When was the last time you saw a movie or television show with only one age range of characters? Unless we’re talking about Lord of the Flies, there’s a role for every age group. Maybe you once dreamed of becoming an actor, but you always stuck to more practical careers. Now you can become a hobby actor by taking classes and joining a local theater group. It’s a great way to make friends and be part of a community.

If you’re serious about turning acting into a potential screen career, look for casting calls on Backstage and submit to any roles that describe you. Take as many auditions as possible because the more you practice, the more skilled you become. Rejections aren’t fun, but it’s par for the course that you’ll fail more than you’ll succeed, and those failures are a great learning experience. Try out for even the smallest roles. Not everyone has to be a star; small parts are needed for all ages.

Fitness

Not only is it never too late to get into shape, but the older you are, the more you should have fitness in your life. Fitness doesn’t have to mean six-pack abs and bulging biceps. Fitness means you’re able to go up the stairs without shortness of breath or feeling wonky in the knees and hips, walk without feeling tired or sore, carry things without hurting your shoulder or wrists, pass your medical tests with flying colors, and live the longest and healthiest life you can live.

You can start by going on daily walks with friends and then graduate to group fitness classes for yoga, swimming, or biking. For seniors, it’s better to stick to beginner or senior-specific classes so that you don’t overdo yourself. If you’re more of a solo exerciser, you can exercise at home with fitness bands, a yoga mat, and light weights. Start searching online for easy videos to follow along.

Dance

Dancing fulfills multiple needs. It satisfies a desire to do performance art, meets your fitness requirement, and can even be therapeutic. Enroll in a seniors dance class with friends, or learn basic moves online if you’re shy about dancing in public.  

Music

Musical instruments do not discriminate. You don’t have to look the part; you just have to play (or sing) the part. Making music can be good for the soul because it provides an emotional release and general good feelings. Whether you’re choosing to sing or play a musical instrument, you can learn online, take solo lessons, or join a class to play with a band.
